In the heart of Los Angeles, at the Sofi Stadium, a monumental event unfolded, marking a significant milestone in the realm of electronic dance music. The recent Illenium Trilogy Show not only mesmerized attendees with pulsating beats and electrifying performances but also etched its name in history by breaking the record for the highest wattage laser show ever witnessed, featuring an impressive fleet of 147 laser systems and over 4,000W of pure laser power, and the largest deployment of KVANT laser projectors. But behind the spectacle lies a story of innovation, collaboration, and the pursuit of pushing the limits of technology.
The Team Behind the Scenes
Headed by our friends at Polar Productions, with Brad Kellogg as the Lead Designer and Bill Loftus as the Laser Programmer, the laser design and programming for the show were nothing short of extraordinary. Utilizing laser technology and meticulous planning, they orchestrated a mesmerizing display with their talented team that perfectly complemented the electrifying performances by various artists throughout the night, including surprise guest performances from Avril Lavigne and Seven Lions.
A Closer Look at the Laser Technology
The backbone of the laser setup was the BEYOND Advanced and Ultimate software, strategically deployed to control different sections of the rig with precision. Through the BEYOND talk server, they achieved seamless integration, allowing for synchronized control of all 147 lasers with just a single MIDI button. This level of coordination was essential in creating the breathtaking visuals that illuminated Sofi Stadium.
Depence 3 also played a crucial role in the planning process, providing advanced rendering and visualization capabilities to map out the trussing and determine the optimal placement for each laser. This meticulous planning ensured that every beam of light hit its mark, contributing to the overall spectacle of the event.
The majority of the lasers on set included the KVANT Atom 42 lasers, deployed on the main stage and center DJ set. With their new innovative foam aluminum design and 42 watts of power, they seamlessly integrated with the lighting design, creating a harmonious synergy between sound and visuals. The addition of BeamBrush 35 lasers added a dynamic element, allowing for variable divergence and instantaneous oscillation, further enhancing the immersive experience. The classic Clubmax 6800 and 6000 laser systems were also used and mounted above the stage and audience. These systems beautifully worked together to create intricate layers of laser light.
A standout feature of the show was the EPIC 270W laser (pictured above), a true marvel of engineering. With its water-cooled design and remote chiller unit, it projected stunning beams of light that enveloped the entire stadium. Despite its immense power, the laser maintained a nice tight beam, ensuring maximum impact while staying within safety parameters.
Going beyond the live audience, the implementation of laser banding added an extra layer of excitement for livestream viewers, creating captivating ribbon-like effects that enthralled audiences worldwide.
A Testament to Technological Creativity
The Illenium Trilogy Show at Sofi Stadium showcased the intersection of music and technology, pushing the boundaries of live entertainment through collaborative brilliance and innovative use of laser technology. As audiences look to the future, the legacy of this groundbreaking event will continue to inspire and amaze for years to come.
